The short answer

Get fully erect, stand up straight and hold your penis level, at 90 degrees to your body. Lay a rigid ruler on top, press the end into the fat pad until it touches the pubic bone, and read at the tip. That is bone-pressed erect length, or BPEL. For girth, wrap a soft tape around the middle of the shaft, snug but not tight.

Measure the same way every time, once a month, on a rest day. The average erect length in clinic studies is 5.17 inches and the average girth is 4.59 inches.

What You Need

Two tools, five minutes and a bit of privacy. Measure at a time when you can get fully erect without rushing.

  • A rigid ruler for length, metal or hard plastic. Not a soft tape, which bends over the shaft and reads long.
  • A soft tape measure for girth, the kind used for sewing. A piece of string or a strip of paper works too.
  • A notebook or the PE Trainer app to write down the date and your numbers.

No ruler at home? Print our free ruler. It has a length ruler that starts right at the edge, a girth strip, and a check square so you know it printed at the right size.

Get the printable ruler

Make Sure Your Ruler Starts at Zero

Many rulers have a blank strip before the 0 mark. If you press the end of that ruler to the bone, you lose that strip from your reading. Either measure from the 0 line or use a ruler that starts at the edge.

How to Measure Penis Length, Step by Step

This gives you bone-pressed erect length, or BPEL, the number doctors, studies and our coaches use. It takes about a minute.

  1. Étape 1

Get a rigid ruler that starts at zero

Use a hard ruler, metal or plastic. Many rulers have a blank strip before the 0. If yours does, measure from the 0 line or use our printable ruler, which starts at the edge.

  2. Étape 2

    Get fully erect

Measure at your normal full erection, the same way every time. A half erection can read short.

  3. Étape 3

    Stand up straight

Stand, don't sit, and don't lean forward. Hunching changes the angle and the reading.

  4. Step 4

    Point it straight out

Hold the penis level, at 90 degrees to your body, parallel to the floor. Not angled up or down.

  5. Step 5

Ruler on top, pressed to the bone

Lay the ruler along the top of the shaft. Press the end into the fat pad above the penis until you feel the pubic bone.

  6. Step 6

    Read at the very tip

Read where the tip of the head lands, not past it. Round down to the nearest eighth of an inch or millimeter.

  7. Step 7

    Repeat and write it down

Take 2 or 3 readings and keep the best one. Write it down with the date, or log it in the PE Trainer app.

Measure straight out perpendicular to your pelvis. Don't hunch over.

Why Measure on Top

The top of the shaft has a fixed starting point, the pubic bone. The underside starts at the scrotum, which moves and stretches, so the number changes every time. Measuring along the side is just as unreliable.

Top is the accepted medical way to measure but as long as you measure the same way, you can track that you made progress.

Coach Chez, in our Discord

If You Are Uncircumcised

Pull the foreskin back first and measure to the tip of the head, not to the end of the foreskin. Measure girth with the foreskin back too.

If Your Penis Curves

Measure straight-line length with the rigid ruler, the same way as everyone else. If you want to track the curve, take a side photo at full erection from the same spot each month and compare the angle. If a curve is new, painful or getting worse, see a urologist. Read our guide to penis extenders for Peyronie's disease.

Inches or Centimeters?

Either works, as long as you stick with one. Many men track in centimeters and millimeters because the steps are smaller. A 2 mm gain shows on a metric ruler but falls between the eighth-inch marks.

BPEL vs NBPEL, and Why the Fat Pad Matters

There are two ways to measure erect length. Bone-pressed (BPEL) pushes the ruler through the fat pad to the bone. Non-bone-pressed (NBPEL) rests it on the skin. The difference is the fat pad.

1234565.6 inRead at the tipPubic boneRuler rests on the skinThe fat pad is not counted
Non-bone-pressed erect length. The ruler rests on the skin, so the fat pad in front of the bone is not counted.

In our PE Trainer app, 6,954 men logged both numbers. For the typical man, pressing to the bone added 0.51 inches. For a quarter of men it was 0.90 inches or more, and for 1 in 10 it was 1.22 inches or more.

How much the fat pad hides, BPEL minus NBPEL

Typicalmedian0.51"
High 25%of men0.90"
Top 10%of men1.22"

6,954 men in the PE Trainer app who logged both measurements, self-measured, first entry.

So which one should you use? Track BPEL, because body fat does not change it, so any change is real. NBPEL is the length a partner actually sees, and it goes up when you lose belly fat.

We typically use bone pressed measurements bc those will provide a constant fixed base starting point. Non bone pressed can vary depending on your body fat percentage, where you place the ruler, different angles etc.

Coach Chaswood, in our Discord

You get more usable inches. So not real growth but your non bone pressed measure will increase.

How to Measure Penis Girth

Girth is the distance around the shaft, not across it. Measure it erect, around the middle, with a soft tape.

BaseMeasure hereMid-shaftBelow the headSnug, not tight. Fully erect.
Measure girth around the middle of the erect shaft. Base and below the head are optional extra numbers.
  • Get fully erect and stand up straight.
  • Find the middle of the shaft, halfway between the base and the head.
  • Wrap a soft tape around it once, snug against the skin but not squeezing.
  • Read where the tape meets the zero end. That is mid-shaft erect girth, often written MSEG.
  • Repeat once or twice and keep the number that comes up most.

Girth is not the same all the way along. Many men are thicker at the base or just below the head. If you track those too, measure them the same way every time.

No Tape? Use a String or a Strip of Paper

Wrap a piece of string or a thin strip of paper around the middle, mark where it overlaps with a pen, then lay it flat along a ruler. Our printable ruler has a girth strip you can cut out and wrap.

Girth for Condoms and Pump Cylinders

Your erect girth is the number that matters for fit. Condom brands size by girth, so compare it with their chart. For a penis pump, divide your girth by 3.14 to get your width, then pick a cylinder a little wider. Our cylinder size calculator does the math, and coaches tell men to measure hard, not soft.

How to Measure BPFSL, Stretched Flaccid Length

BPFSL is bone-pressed stretched flaccid length. You measure soft, stretched straight out as far as it comfortably goes. Men who use an extender track it because it moves first.

12345676.6 inRead at the tipPubic bonePress to the bonePull straight out
Bone-pressed stretched flaccid length. Pull the head straight out, press the ruler to the bone, read at the tip.
  • Stand up, soft, not half hard.
  • Hold the head and pull the penis straight out from your body, firmly, until it won't go further without discomfort.
  • Press the ruler on top into the fat pad until it touches the bone.
  • Read at the tip, take 2 or 3 readings and keep the best.

Why Stretched Length Matters

In a study of 80 men measured soft, stretched and erect, stretched length tracked erect length better than any other soft measurement. A second study found it takes about 450 g of pull, roughly 1 lb, to stretch the penis to its full erect length, and that doctors usually pull less. So pull firmly, the same way each time.

If your BPFSL climbs far ahead of your erect length, our coaches pause the extender and add pumping for a while.

When your stretched flaccid gets way bigger than erect length it's time to pause and pump.

Coach Chez, in our Discord

Flaccid Length Changes All Day

Plain flaccid length, not stretched, is not worth tracking. Cold, stress, exercise and arousal change it a lot within the same day.

The 9 Most Common Measuring Mistakes

Measuring the wrong way is the second most common thing our coaches correct, about 173 times in our Discord, and 91 new members have asked how to measure. These are the usual culprits.

Top, pressed to the boneAlong the undersidePointing upNot pressed in
Only the top, pressed to the bone, gives a number you can trust and repeat.
  1. Measuring along the side or the underside. The underside starts at the scrotum, which moves. Measure on top, the way doctors do.
  2. Pressing differently each time. Pick bone-pressed and press firmly to the bone every time. Switching between pressed and not pressed can swing your number by half an inch.
  3. Pointing up or down. Angle changes the reading. Hold it straight out, level with the floor.
  4. Sitting or hunching. Stand up straight. Bending forward pushes the fat pad around.
  5. A ruler with a gap before zero. Measure from the 0 line, not the end of the ruler, or use a ruler that starts at the edge.
  6. A soft tape for length. A tailor's tape bends over the curve of the shaft and reads long. Use a rigid ruler for length and the soft tape for girth.
  7. A half erection. Measure fully hard, the same way and at the same time of day. How you get hard can change the number.
  8. Measuring right after a session. Pumping and extending cause swelling for a few hours. Measure on a rest day, before training.
  9. Rounding up. Round down, and read at the tip, not past it. Gains are measured in millimeters, so an extra eighth hides real progress.

How Often to Measure and Track Progress

Once a month is enough. Real change is slow, so measuring every day mostly shows noise: a softer erection, a cold room, a long day.

  • Same conditions every time: same time of day, same position, same ruler, on a rest day before training.
  • Log every number: BPEL, NBPEL if you like, mid-shaft girth and BPFSL if you use an extender.
  • Take a photo with the ruler in place, from the same angle, so you can compare months side by side.

Most men skip this. In our app, only 14% of the men who logged a measurement came back to log a second month, which means most of them will never know if their routine works.

Tracking is super important because your gains are going to be in millimeters.

Baseem, on YouTube

The PE Trainer app keeps your measurements and photos behind a PIN and reminds you to measure. Men who use an extender can also log BPFSL before and after a session.

How Much Bigger Does It Get When Erect?

On average, from about 3.61 inches soft to 5.17 inches erect in clinic studies. But soft size is a poor guide. Some men grow a lot when erect and some grow very little, which is why studies, and our coaches, use erect or stretched length instead.

Is 6 Inches Big?

Yes, 6 inches erect is above the clinic average of 5.17 inches. 5 inches is close to average and well inside the normal range. For girth, the clinic average is 4.59 inches, so 4.5 to 5 inches is about average and over 5.5 inches is large. Most men who worry measure normal. In one clinic study of 67 men asking for penis lengthening surgery, most had a normal length.

Measure Before You Start Any Routine

If you plan to use an extender or a pump, measure before your first session. Without a starting number you will never know what worked.

For an extender, track BPEL and BPFSL. For a pump, track mid-shaft erect girth and use it to pick your cylinder. Then measure once a month, on a rest day. Read how to use a penis extender or how to use a penis pump to get started.

Penis Measuring Questions

How do you measure your penis correctly?

Get fully erect, stand up straight and hold the penis level, at 90 degrees to your body. Lay a rigid ruler along the top, press the end into the fat pad until it touches the pubic bone, and read at the tip. That is bone-pressed erect length, or BPEL. For girth, wrap a soft tape around the middle of the shaft.

Do you measure from the top or the bottom?

The top. The underside starts at the scrotum, which moves and adds length that is not really there. Doctors and studies measure along the top.

Should I press the ruler into the fat pad?

Yes, if you want a number you can track. Pressing to the bone gives a fixed starting point. In our app, pressing to the bone added a typical 0.51 inches over a ruler resting on the skin.

What is BPEL?

Bone-pressed erect length. It is erect length measured on top of the shaft with the ruler pressed into the fat pad until it touches the pubic bone. It is the standard for tracking progress because body fat does not change it.

What is NBPEL?

Non-bone-pressed erect length. The ruler rests on the skin instead of pressing to the bone. It is the length a partner actually sees, and it changes with your weight.

What is BPFSL?

Bone-pressed stretched flaccid length. You measure soft, pull the penis straight out as far as it comfortably goes, and press the ruler to the bone. In studies, stretched length tracked erect length better than any other soft measurement. Read what BPFSL means.

Where do you measure girth?

Around the middle of the erect shaft, with a soft tape, snug but not tight. Some men also track the base and just below the head, but mid-shaft is the standard number, often written MSEG.

How do I measure girth without a tape measure?

Wrap a piece of string or a thin strip of paper around the middle of the erect shaft, mark where it meets, then lay it flat on a ruler. Or print our free ruler, which has a girth strip.

Should I measure hard or soft?

Hard for length and girth. Soft, and stretched, only for BPFSL. Flaccid length changes with temperature and stress all day, so it is not worth tracking.

Do I include the head when I measure?

Yes. Measure all the way to the tip of the head.

Why is my measurement different every time?

Erection quality, angle, posture, time of day and how hard you press all move the number. Measure the same way, at the same time, on a rest day, and keep the best of 2 or 3 readings.

What is the average penis size?

In studies where doctors did the measuring, the average erect length was 5.17 inches (13.12 cm) and the average erect girth was 4.59 inches (11.66 cm). When men measured themselves, the averages were a bit higher, 5.57 and 4.81 inches.

Is 6 inches big?

Yes, 6 inches erect is above average. The average in clinic studies is 5.17 inches. Bone-pressed numbers run a little higher than clinic numbers, so compare like with like.

Is a 5 inch penis small?

No. 5 inches erect is close to the clinic average of 5.17 inches, and well inside the normal range.

Is a 4.5 inch girth bad?

No. The average erect girth in clinic studies is 4.59 inches, so 4.5 inches is about average.

How much bigger does a penis get when erect?

On average, from about 3.61 inches soft to 5.17 inches erect in clinic studies, but it varies a lot. Some men grow much more than others, and soft size does not predict erect size well.

Does losing weight make your penis bigger?

It makes more of it visible. Losing belly fat shrinks the fat pad, so your non-bone-pressed length goes up. Your bone-pressed length stays the same.

How often should I measure?

Once a month, under the same conditions. Measuring more often mostly shows day to day noise, not growth.

How do I measure for a penis pump cylinder?

Measure your erect girth around the middle of the shaft. Divide it by 3.14 to get your width, then pick a cylinder a little wider. Our cylinder size calculator does it for you.

How do I measure for condoms?

Use your erect girth. Condom brands size by girth, so compare your number with the brand's size chart.

Does height predict penis size?

Only a little. The biggest review of measured men found a weak to moderate link between height and stretched or erect length.
